How to Clean a Rug
What you’re going to need
- Dish detergent
- A brush
- Bucket of water
Remove loose contaminants
First you’re going to want to vacuum the rug to remove the lose dirt or dust that has accumulated. If you’re vacuum has a brush attachment then that is great too because it will remove any hair that is caught in the rug. That will be harder to remove later on.
Prepare your cleaning solution
We’re just going to be using watered down dish soap. Do a few squirts of dish soap into a bucket of warm-hot water and mix until you have soapy water. Alternatively you can spray carpet cleaner on the rug.
Do a spot test
On one of the corners of the rug, apply your cleaning solution and give it a bit of a scrub. We’re just doing this to make sure that the cleaning solution or brush you’re using will not harm the rug. If no harm is done then continue onto the next step.
Apply cleaning solution
You want to pour the cleaning solution you’re using onto the rug. You may not want to use all of it just yet. Let it soak in for a couple of minutes. Then you can begin to start scrubbing the rug. Scrub the entire rug a few times and give any dirty spots extra attention.
Rinse rug
The easiest way to rinse your rug is to simply spray it down with a garden hose. Give it a good spray and make sure you’ve washed out all the cleaning chemicals.
Optional
If your rug is still not as clean as you’d like it. Repeat the last to steps until you’re satisfied.
