    It’s may not be a great idea to bite into an apple you got from the store without cleaning it first. They could be covered in bacteria from handling, insects and logistics. Depending on where they are sourced from they could have pesticide residue on them. Often these pesticides can be dangerous with some even being know carcinogens. Meaning they have the capacity to cause cancer in the long term. So much risk for trying to be healthy! It’s okay though because there are methods you can use to thoroughly clean your apples prior to consuming them.

    We’re going to be covering multiple methods on how to clean apples. From just a rinse to kill bacteria to a thorough clean to remove the wax.

    Simple rinse method

    If all you’re concerned about it the bacteria that occurred from peoples hands in the shop then a simple rinse in a bowl with a splash of vinegar should do the trick.

    Simply fill up a bowl with water, add your apples and a splash of vinegar. Swirl the apples around a bit and rinse the water. Repeat this up to 3 times.

    Removing Wax methods

    There’s two methods you can use to remove the wax from your apples. One is more thorough and will remove most of the bacteria and pesticides too.

    Quick boil method (less thorough)

    Add the apples to a saucepan of boiling water for less than 10 seconds. Then remove the apples from the water and wipe them down thoroughly with a tea towel. This should remove most of the wax from the apples.


    Lemon baking soda method (thorough)

    Step One

    Cut a lemon in half and cover the exposed side in baking soda.

    Step Two

    Scrub the apples with the surface of the lemon that you’ve covered in baking soda. The baking soda and the acidity of the lemon will help to remove the wax.

    Briefly dunk the apples into a saucepan of boiling water for less than 10 seconds.


    Step Four

    Rinse the apples with water to remove any left over vinegar or baking soda residue.
