    Because your ears are a sensitive part of your body, it crucial that your earrings are cleaned regularly. Germs and other foreign particles can get trapped on your earrings and this can result in an outer ear infection.

    The best method for cleaning earrings is to use hydrogen peroxide. This is because it is excellent at killing bacteria and creates a great shine for the earrings. First start off with soaking a cotton pad with hydrogen peroxide. Lightly rub the earring (off the ear) with the cotton pad in sweeping motions, making sure to get in all the nooks and crannies. Continue until the desired look, this may take a few minutes. Set aside to let dry, touch with fingers to see if it is dry. Once dry, you can put your earrings back in your ears or away in your jewellery box.

    Mix together a half cup of white vinegar and 2 tablespoons of baking soda in a cup. Add the earrings that you are wanting to clean gently to the mixture. You can let this sit up to 3 hours, the longer the better. Once the time is up, rinse the jewellery under lukewarm water to get any mixture still on the earrings. Dry with a microfibre cloth to eliminate any scratching caused from rough cloths. This solution will make your earrings clean and extra shiny.

    This method is great for an on the go clean as you can keep the light weight cloth in your purse and use it when you need it. You use this by lightly rubbing the earrings in between the cloth, you will start to see the grime start to come off on the cloth as a grey colour.     • Alternate between different earrings, to make them last longer.
    • When cleaning avoid doing it over the sink otherwise there’s a high risk of them falling down the drain. 
    • Never use toothpaste to clean earrings as it is too abrasive causing the top layer to be damaged or eaten away. 
    • Never put your jewellery in the microwave, putting metal in the microwave can be dangerous.
